|A Quick Guide to Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech, Morocco

Are you looking for fun, sun, culture, and history then Morocco is the ideal destination. If you leave the famous tourist beaches behind and off the beaten track, you will experience many adventures. Whether you want to go on a desert trip to explore the less-visited villages or discover one of the country's historic cities, a holiday in Morocco guarantees an unforgettable experience.

Marrakech is known for the busy squares and the narrow streets in the medieval center. This imperial city is one of the most popular destinations in the country. Get lost in the magical labyrinth of alleys here and discover hidden spots and secret gardens that seem untouched by modern times.

The Mosque of Booksellers

The Koutoubia Mosque is one of the most important historical buildings in Marrakesh and also the largest religious structure in the red city. Eye-catchers are the large minaret and the tropical garden. The Koutoubia Mosque was built in the style of Almohad in the 12th century. It is located about 200 meters from the famous Jemaa el-Fna place, the main square of the city which is a UNESCO world heritage since 2001. Five times a day, one voice surpasses the sound of the medina when the muezzin (or muadhan) calls out - "God is great" for the faithful to pray from the minaret. However, the mosque's famous minaret was completed during the reign of the Berber Almohad Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur (1184-1199) and inspired other outstanding buildings such as the Giralda (the bell tower of Seville Cathedral) and the Hassan Tower in Rabat, the capital of the country. The minaret is also considered to be the symbol of Marrakesh. Non-Muslims are not allowed inside as it is still used for worship so if you are not Muslim you are not welcome in this building but you can still enjoy the beautiful architecture of the tower from the outside.

Address: Koutoubia Mosque, Medina Jamaa el-Fenna, Marrakesh 40000, Morocco / GPS: 31.623726, -7.993596

Tamsahelte is a small Berber village in the province of Zagora, Morocco, about 10km from Tazzarine and 20km from N'Kob. It is located in the heart of the Ait Atta region, near the Jbel Saghro. The village has about five hundred inhabitants. The locals live from agriculture. Despite the dry climate, the wells produce enough water for residents. Tamsahelte and its surroundings are known for their good quality of henna and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus). The language spoken in this region is Tashelhiyt or Shilha (Tamazight).

Best Things To Do in Tamsahelte

Foum Tizza: The dunes are also close to Tamsahelte. A path through the flat land leads to the dunes. Yellow sand surrounds the black rocks. The dunes are not yet touristy which certainly gives them added value as you can enjoy the calmness of the desert intensity.

Ait Ouazik: Ait Ouazik is situated a few kilometers from Tamsahelte via Tazzarine. The village is located in a valley. You can still visit the ruins of a Kasbah here. The main attraction is the prehistoric site, which consists of petroglyphs. The drawings date from around 5000 BC.

Aït Ouazik's rock carvings represent wildlife such as elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, ostriches, buffaloes, antelopes, etc. There are also geometric figures such as spirals, concentric arcs, circles. All these figures refer to a hunting season. Certain scenes seem to indicate what the hunt was like, namely the fall. The research and approach to the game can also be deduced from the drawings.

In the surroundings, a few adventure trips are organized by various travel agencies. You can also enjoy the very exciting daily life of the Berbers in the open-air market in the region. Below you will find the days when markets take place:

  • Monday: Alnif

  • Wednesday: Tazarine

  • Thursday: Agdz

  • Sunday: N’kolb and Zagora

For more information about Zagora provincial markets, please check the weekly market list in the governorate of Zagora.(PDF document).

Tamsahelte's Climate

Tamsahelte's climate is desert-like, usually sunny and dry. The highest average temperature is in July, around 32.1 °C. January shows the lowest temperatures of the year. It's only around 10.1 °C.

Tamsahelte's Economy

Tamsahelte's economy depends on agriculture, tourism, and trade. The locals live as self-sufficient, mainly from agriculture, including livestock (sheep, goats). There is no industry or other means of earning money at this location. Therefore young people leave the village to look for a job in larger cities. In this way, they can support their parents. In addition, many families live off the money of family members who work in Europe.

Tamsahelte itself does not have an open-air market. Most residents make their own purchases in Tazzarine (about 10 kilometers). The open-air market or better known in the country as souq is taken place on Wednesday in the center of the town for all local products such as henna and all the essential articles needed for everyday life. On Tuesday is the livestock market.

How To Get To Tamsahelte

For travelers from Marrakech, there is a daily bus at 10:00 AM. The service is provided by CTM which also stops in Agdz. From Zagora city, it is easier with a shared taxi than by bus. The best way to travel here is to rent a car, this way you have the opportunity to discover everything the area has to offer.

From Agdz, the road leads to Tansikht, a crucial crossroads for the road onwards to Zagora or the exit towards Nkob and Tazzarine (this most spectacular stretch of the N9). Taxis waiting here for travelers coming from Zagora or Ouarzazate. The taxis are normally shared with six people unless one wants to pay a taxi only for themselves. If there are no taxis, for example late at night, there is still the option to hitchhike. This is usual, the locals do that to reach their village.

From Tansikht to Tamsahelte, you drive through the village of N'Kob, with its 45 kasbahs. A few of these kasbahs have now become hotels and restaurants. On Saturday there is a small local market where mainly sheep and goats are sold. On the next day, there is a large market where all people from the area do their shopping and meet people who would otherwise never see each other. Here are not only the necessary purchases made, but also all kinds of news are exchanged. The road from N'kob to Tamsahelte leads past several Berber villages with their mosques and schools.  After 20 km by car, you arrive in Tamsahelte. Tamsahelte is located on the right side of the main road (N12), crossing a mostly dry river and vegetable gardens.

A walk in the village through the narrow streets with the irrigation channels is worthwhile.  Some residents are glad to invite you to their home to enjoy the traditional Moroccan mint tea ( Johnnie Walker of the Berbers) or even a tagine, more like couscous this is the national dish.

Tamsahelt's Accommodation

Well, Tamsahelte only has one hotel where you can enjoy your stay during your trip. If you are looking for peace in this oasis, there is a riad called Riad du Sud. Riad is a former farmhouse that now becomes a charming clay-walled hotel, which is the area's quintessential architecture, and much emphasis has been placed on originality, preserving the materials of the original farmhouse.

Protip: It is advisable to take with you enough money from the ATM cash at Agdz when you travel to this region as there is no bank in Nkob, otherwise, you should drive to Tazarine or Alnif. Now that you know what this area has to offer, you can prepare yourself for a great adventure, Tadot Atcht Dla7 Orta Ismar .  :)
